Wellbeing in Nature

Wellbeing and being in nature are closely connected.

Chances are you have experienced it as well. A sense of calm and letting go when you are walking through a forest, listening to the birds sing or a stream trickle, looking at the intricate design of a fern leave, smelling damp earth and wood.

Or maybe a feeling of flow, of loosing track of time as you are totally immersed in an outdoor activity.

Something in me shifts when I go outdoors

Walking the vast plains and seeing the Milky Way, touching the age-old rock, gazing up the trunks of gum trees at the blue sky above, feeling vulnerable and invincible at the same time. Simply BE-ing and not needing to be anyone except myself.

Other cultures have concepts that express this connection between wellbeing and nature: in Norwegian it is ‘Friluftsliv’. In Japanese ‘Shirin-yoku’ or tree-bathing.

“It was a real reflective and cathartic experience and provided a much needed re-invigoration during these times.”
— Lexie W.

Those concepts go beyond exercising outside; they are a feeling of being connected to something larger than yourself. A sense of connecting to nature without destroying or disturbing nature and without external disruptions. They refer to “a state of mind which doesn’t necessarily require any physical activity. All that is needed to experience this calming and resourceful state is to be in the context of nature.”

Going outside, exploring and experiencing nature and being in the moment is one of the simplest and most powerful ways to improve your wellbeing, to reconnect, ground and reset.

Wellbeing in nature is an integral part of my wellbeing and success in life and I look forward sharing this simple, yet powerful experience with you.

Each of us may find this connection in different ways. For some of us it’s the peace and calm of a mindful walk. Others may crave the exhilaration of abseiling or climbing; or the immersion in nature during a multi-day hike.
